In my early days of carving I had a tendency of making my noses and bodies too flat. Is this your problem? After about a hundred Santas, the light in my head finally went off to allow for more wood in the front of the face to make a larger nose. Remember there are no rules - just make it any way you want.

Alan, just keep working at it. I just put a santa carving down a few minutes ago because I wasn't liking the nose or face at all. I'm going to take a break and see what I think when I pick him up again. If I'm still not happy....well...it will just have to be something different.

Alan, remember the face forms pretty much a 90 degree angle with the nose at the apex. Also, a nose lies 1/2 way in the face and 1/2 way out. Many beginning carvers end up with a flat face with a "nose" stuck on it.

Wink Re: The Nose

Have viewed Gene Webb's video "Carving a Nose" but nonetheless I still like funny noses. Being a beginner I have the same problem carving a nose - so its practice, practice ... for me.

One thing that helped me was to take a scrap piece of wood and just keep practicing and practicing etc.
