Hello all, I was wondering something...I read in a lot of posts from carvers that they have, for example, 100 tools, but only use 6-7 or I bought a set of ABC, put them in a drawer, and bought DEF....if that is the case and there are maybe thousands of orphaned or seldom used tools around, why aren't there more in the Classifieds on this site, so beginners like me can make our tool buying mistakes less expensive? Or are tools like children...you may not really like one of two of them but you would never sell one. ![]() thanks a lot for any insight I may be given. Frank in NJ

Frank, Speaking strictly for myself, and as a self-professed tool junkie, my surplus of tools are kept in reserve for future usage. I'm a relative newcomer to carving (about 2.5 years), but make a very large number of my own tools, mostly knives. From time to time I will meet someone or someone I already know will tell me they want to give carving a try themselves. Sometimes these folks are somewhat disadvantaged, and if I am compelled to do so I will give them a few knives and a stick or two of basswood to give them a start, always with the caveat that if they decide that carving is not for them that they return the tools to me rather than letting them go to waste or selling them to someone else. I have been the grateful recipient of several tools in my collection that were gifted to me, so I'm just passing the good will along the line. Sort of a karma thing. I'm not above selling them myself either, but don't want to go in the business of tool making, nor do I want to get rid of a tool that I might find greater use for in the future as I try different styles or forms of carving. L.P.

what do you mean selling tools ? i don't understand, how could anyone do such thing!? on a more serious note, ebay is your friend. search for 'carving chisel' and 'carving gouge' and be on the watch for good deals. beware of turning tools. I personally avoid anything that has not a reputable name brand stamped on the blade. also, don't expect the tools to come sharp. |

It looks like the Classifieds are like the Calendar of Events - members have not discovered them (or ignore them) as a source of information or outlet for excess tools.

Thanks for the comments folks. I have purchased from ebay since it's inception and sometimes buying used there does not save as much as people may think. Thanks again, I appreciate everyone's efforts and time to answer my query. Frank in NJ

Check out........MidWest Tool Collectors Assoc., Tony Murland (google), Jon Zimmers Antique tools, Union Hill Antique Tools, but my fave is the tool list, emailed each month by Patrick Leach. He usually has a good many used and sometimes new carving tools on his list. Murland is in England so watch the shipping. I have bought from both TM and PL and was very satisfied.

I like to put a tool in my hand before taking the plung. That way I know it fits my hand. A tool that feels good will have a use at my place. Try to get the best your situation will allow and you may not end up with excess tooling. Are clubs in your area? We love to show our stuff off ya know. You have asked a good question, good luck with your choices. Carve On, Kadiddle |

I'm just like Inady,I am a Certified Tool Junkie without the desire of recovery,if I had all of the tools I gave away to some friends that worked hard but some how could not afford to buy tools,I would not have room in my small shop to store them.I to have every size and shape of knives ,other edge tools plus power tools,to prove I'm a tool addict.Who knows may someday I will use them.Just do n't ask me how many carving tools I have in front of my wife.
