Default Nice to be back

Gee I missed reading this board, after 9 days with no power, the lights finally came on. Two hurricaines in two weeks with another on the way. How far is it to Seattle?? We lost a backyard shed, some shingles and a orange tree. But all in all we were very lucky. Now to spend three days reading the board.

Good to see you survived! Have you been able to collect any carving material left by the storms?

Glad to see you're still with us and safe. Florida and the South may have great warm weather most of the year, but pay for it when hurrican season comes around. I'll stick to my cold weather and marked seasons, up North here.

Just think about all that 'found wood' laying around now though. A carvers paradise.

Good luck through the rest of the season. Hang onto a bed sheet outside and those winds will probably blow you half way to Seattle.

The wood lying on the ground in my area seems to be either pine or oak, with a small amount of pepper trees (they don't break they bend.) And a great deal of 2x4's. OK a quick question, is there a way to distinguish yellow pine from white pine, without stripping it first.??

Yep, white pine will have a gray bark....smooth on younger trees and furrowed on older, but still very gray in color. Â*Southern yellow pine will have a rusty-orange colored rough bark.

Also the needles on white pine will be about 3 to 6' long and five to a bundle....yellow pine will have needles about 10 inches long in bundles of 3.

Steve,
Glad you survived Ivan I hear it was really bad. I hear people up here say that would be fun to experience that, but to me they have no realization of how devestating those storms can be. I was horrified to hear of all the deaths and people losing all they had. I will stay here in land and brave the elements and seasons in the north. Nice to have you back though and make sure you get some of that wood.
Colin

Thanks Al, I will start my hunt for wood as soon as I get my roof fixed, not leaking yet but why wait.

Colin: We didn't get Ivan we were in the path of Charley & Frances, I live on the east coast of Florida

Good to have you back Steve and to hear you didn't fare too badly from the storms. My brother-in-law lives in Punta Gorda and the house they were in blew apart around them, thankfully no one was hurt!! Scary, scary time! Up here it's just tons of rain, 4 1/2' from Frances and 4 3/8' from Ivan, hubby said he's starting on the Ark this weekend! Again, glad you're safe and sound!! Callynne
