Default Next tool selection

Alright Folks I need some advice.

I am looking to purchase some new tools, I carve in the round any where from 2" to 12" so far. I am starting to drift towards caricatures mostly smaller ones. I am looking to spend about $100.00 to $150.00, I am not brand specific.

What I have:
- Standard Denny Knife
- 2" Allen Goodman Up-swept Knife
- 5/8" Stubby Denny V
- 5 piece Flexcut Set
- 1/8 Flexcut U gouge
- Denny Detail Blade in Custom Handle

Thanks
Josh

Check out Drake Knives.com and Pinewood Forge Scandinavian Knives for some ideas.

You would be happy with the Drake tools.....

Look for a #9 in 1/4" and a #7 in 1/2" as good additions. I'm not sure what's in the Flexcut set, but it would not hurt to have some duplicate sizes in another brand. If you want more, a #5 or even #3 in 1/2" or larger comes in handy.

A small V-tool (~1/4") may be an option also.

After using those, you can fill in around those sweeps/sizes.

I have to agree with the others Drake all the way. You can get some good ideas as to sizes if you take a look at the Drake website. I like to buy a tool at a time, as I need it. Also easier on the wallet that way.

I think a set of the Dockyard micro tools would be a nice addition for what you are doing .

I have tools very similar to what you have also. Somethings that I might spend that money on:

I love my "Old Reliable" utility knife and use it on every carving I do. I also use my flex shaft tool with the Foredom blue stones and the bristle sanding discs on every carving... I hate sanding things by hand and these help give a cleaner, finished look without destroying details. Here's some links:

$50 - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

CeramCut from Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers Supply $20 for a set

Foredom Bristle Discs from Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers $20 for a set with a mandrel

And that still leaves you with $50 that you could buy some additional burrs for the flexshaft, a book or DVD, or another knife or gouge.

I think Jimmy Joe made a good suggestion a set of dockwood micro tools or flexcut micro tools. I have the dockwood set and use it a lot and I also carve mostly in the size you mentioned

If you go on the mountain woodcarvers website they have caricature tool sets i'm not quite sure what tools are in them though you might already have them.
