Thanks for all the gr8 suggestions. I went ahead and ordered a dozen pieces of wood from Heinecke, the starter set from Rick and two books from Amazon.com ("Carving Caricature Figures From Scratch by Pete LeClair, Caricature Carving from head to Toe by Dave Stetson, and Carving Caricature Head & Faces by Pete LeClair) - I hope these are good books to start with.

All should be in by Thursday and I'm chomping at the bit.

Hey Bob , glad you found the site , somewhat like you My wife and I travel six months of the year and found some answers on what I can and cannot carry in an Rv. Most all campgrounds have a woodworking shop that is open to customers for their use , most have band saws. almost every City has a carving club , another source for blanks,. In Yuma where I hang my hat in the winter the city has an excellent adult centre ,.(where I am the lead instructor)(which means I get to cut most all the blanks and take all the abuse LOL)There are 7 of us that volunteer to teach every aspect from basic knife cuts ,caricatures ,animals , realistic to wood burning. we have most days over one hundred carvers from all over the U.S. & Canada. The city have bought us a 19" band saw & 13" planer for our use.Plus a good supply of bass wood . Some of us even donate bass wood and butternut to the club . All this cost the carvers $2.00 a day or $30.00 a season . The blanks we sell for $6.00 a board foot which includes the cutting which is returned to the Adult Center funds. Didnt mean to get of on a long story here but most places has a senior program somewhat like this.
Hope this helps with your travels . If you ever get to Yuma AZ look us up.
