Welcome aboard WoodDragon, carving is such a pleasure and form of relaxation, you shall enjoy for years to come.

Dragons make great carvings! With a name like that, I'm sure we'll see some dragon carvings in the future from you?

The others can best direct you on stick carving, so I'll just say welcome.

carving.

Bob

Sassafrass, Cherry, poplar, mayple, redbud are all great. Just make sure you seal the ends and let them dry good. I seal mine with Elmers glue. When the glue dries I place the date cut on the end .Some will take up to 6 months to dry and and I have carved Cherry in 8 weeks with no problem. If you want to cut some for carving this summer or next winter this is a good time to cut them. The sap is not running and they dry faster then if you cut them in the summer.
If you live in an area where they have been doing any logging in the past 6 months to a year you can go check the left behind pile and sometimes find great sticks that are dry and ready to carve. Good place for stumps , logs, knots and bark to carve too. Mike
