Default newbe needs tools

Hi Folks,

I'm thinking about getting back into whittling/carving. I did it as a kid 35 years ago and back then exacto knifes were the lastest thing. Now I noticed kits at Woodcraft.com and Littleshavers. My question, Is this kit a good place to start? (Or...can someone send me a link to better please).

I will not be doing any chipping or anything like that at the beginning because I don't know the first thing about it, just want to get my feet wet with some basic whittling. I need a good knife and a way to sharpen it. And I'll need to know how to sharpen it too.

Thanks,

You can't go wrong with one of Rick's kits at Little Shavers. I recommend them highly. Everything in there to get you started and well sharpened too.

Bob

What Bob and Hi Ho said. I'm a beginner myself and purchased one of Little Shavers kits and couldn't be more pleased. One word of caution, they do come very sharp.

I am a newbie as well and ordered the LS beginners kit. Just received it last week and the tools are very nice and sharp as everone else says. Quality is great and besides the set of gouges and knife you get the strop and rouge, thumb guard and glove which is a great value plus you get the sharpening services of Rick since you purchased it from him. Well worth the 45.00.

I was kinda hoping someone would say the kit from woodcraft is good because I have one here locally. Has anyone bought stuff from there?

Little Shavers is definatly the place to shop. The beginners set that Rick sells is well worth the money. Also he has if you look on the pre owned tools page a set of Miller Falls gouges for $30.00. I have this set and absolutly love it if I didnt already have it I would snap it up in a heartbeat it is a tremendous buy. Just my honest opinion.

Hmmmm, I better get the starter kit so I have what I need to get started except the wood.

Any suggestions on where to get the wood? There's a local woodcraft store here and they do stock basswood, do you think it's ok to get it there to save on shipping cost of should I order it?

Thanks a bunch,
Marty
