| | New to wood carving, ill need some help with deciding on tools and such, please read First of all, ide like to introduce my self.
my name is dylan, i love the outdoors, and wildlife, i also love to travel.
i like to see the world and the treasures within it and im interested in carving.
pretty short and vague introduction, LOL, but its 12:44 in the morning so, yeah.
i want to carve birds mainly, ball in the cage, maybe some caricatures, etc.
ive got my eye on deepwood ventures carving knives, the decoy carvers set is supposed to be good for the kind of carving i want to do. but im beginning to think i need a chisel/gouge and as with any product i buy, i look for quality and have a little extra cash to spend.
if i do need a chisel for birds
im looking at flexcut and carba-tec, im looking for a quality chisel/gouge if i need it.
thanks for the help |

| | Re: New to wood carving, ill need some help with deciding on tools and such, please r You are probably about to be inundated with advice to go to the Little Shavers Wood Carving Supply website and work with Rick to get what you need. I would suggest looking at the Denny chisels and gouges, similar in price to Flexcut, and a little better quality. the minimum you will need (in addition to your knives is a V-tool and a gouge or two, sweeps 3, 5, and 7 are pretty useful, size depends on the size of your carvings. Good luck |

| | Re: New to wood carving, ill need some help with deciding on tools and such, please r I purchased a Deepwoods knife about a month ago, I was not impressed at all, I have a couple Denny and Helvie knives and like them much better. When I first started I bought Flexcut products, I wish I had gone right to Denny, better quality and about the same price. As for Little Shavers, they are excellent people to do bussness with, plus Rick also does sharpening amd reshaping at a very fair price. Best of luck and have fun! I almost forgot, get yourself a carving glove and thumb protector, very important.

| | Re: New to wood carving, ill need some help with deciding on tools and such, please r Hi Dylan, and welcome!
I'd recommend Cape Forge for a good knife, and their gauges as well, although they're pricey. I was told early on to buy the best tools you can afford, and you won't regret it later. It's held true for me so far. I also like Two Cherries and Pfeil gauges, and Dockyard for micro tools. Hope that helps, and good luck with this great hobby!

| | Re: New to wood carving, ill need some help with deciding on tools and such, please r id agree mostly with markken-- the knives i use now are specailty items i had made-- but started with a denny and its a great knife as are helvie-- i dont know cape forge -- so cant comment about that. i have a near complete set of palm tools i have put to gether in the last 8 yrs. but now almost exlucsivley use swiss made pfeil 2-15 11 gauge -- a 25 - 8 guage and couple of flat chisels and i use them on every thing from small to large items. i do also have a set of dock yards that i use occassionally; i think that you said you were willing to spend the extra money to buy good tools-- its cheaper and easier in the long run. |

| | Re: New to wood carving, ill need some help with deciding on tools and such, please r Knives and tools are like girl friends and wives. Everybody has their favorites. There are a lot of quality tools out there. Some much more expensive than others. Inexpensive does not always equal cheap and expensive does not always equal quality. The best advice you were given was to contact Rick and discuss it with him. Email is the easiest way, because he is a very busy man. |

| | Re: New to wood carving, ill need some help with deciding on tools and such, please r hi, and thanks for the replies and i think im going to get a denny as ive heard good things about 01.
these are the ones im looking at for carving birds and other stuff, found all of em at little shavers. 3/4" # 3 Sweep Gouge 50815 $22.95 3/4" # 5 Sweep Gouge 50816 $22.95 3/4" # 7 Sweep Gouge 50817 $22.95 5/16" V-Gouge Denny 1-7/8" Straight Edge Denny 1" Straight Edge
so looks like ill be getting dennies, i want to carve birds mainly, so if you could recommend a "set" not the ones that come with everything but the seperate tools.
i would like to be able to carve birds from small to large, so i guess you get the point.
Thanks |

| | Re: New to wood carving, ill need some help with deciding on tools and such, please r If you are going to be carving huge birds, the 3/4" tools will be fine. For anything smaller than that they may be a bit too large. |
