Default New way to "unwind"

Attached are pictures of one of my fidgets (AKA whimsies). It is whittled out of Bocote. The 1st pic. shows it assembled, as it was carved. The second pic. shows how it unwinds into two pieces. The cigarette (yeah, I'm still hooked) is added to show the size of the piece(s).
Hope you enjoy the idea.
Dan

That's a neat carving. How is Bocote to carve, I was under the impression it was very hard.

Robert,
It is real hard wood. I probably spent more time re-sharpenning than actually cutting!! That's why the shape is so jagged. It's all done as a series of "V" cuts to break the wood out.
On the "plus" side, bocote is a lot stronger than basswood or pine and will hold up to many more unwindings without breaking.
Thanks for the interest.
Dan

The pictures are not the greatest but that sure is some odd looking Bocote, I use it all the time on the lathe and have never seen any of that color. As for carving it I would be staying away from it, it can be extremly splintery and hard to work with. It does however have a different smell it smells like pickles I don't know why but it does. It grows in mexico and northern south america, one of the most widely used woods from that area another one is Cocobolo. Here are some pics of stuff I have made from Bocote.

This is messing with my eyes, lol. You carve it first and then somehow cut it apart and unscrew it? Come to think of it, it messes with my brain too!

Maybe you can find a happy medium with the wood. Harder than basswood and softer than bocote. Something that will last but is easier to carve. It's cool enough as it is but imagine how amazing it would be if it was all smooth and slick. Just my opinion though and I am no expert. I never even heard of bocote before today.

Hi Dan,

That is really neat. Makes me want one, just to have.

It must have taken a while to carve, but it's worth it. I like hardwoods.
