Default New Video: Learning Sticks & Carving A Very Simple Woodspirit Face

I've been using step-by-step learning sticks/models for many years with great success in working with at-risk kids in my woodshop classes and at various Scouting events. Without a doubt learning sticks are one of the most powerful tools that I have for teaching in my woodcarving class arsenal. If a new aspiring student can actually "see" with thier eyes and actually "feel" the steps in carving with thier hands, then I have found that their confidence in learning a new skill is greatly enhanced by ten fold.

I decided to make a two part video based upon the learning stick that I developed and use almost daily in my classes. The instructions take you step by step in carving a very simple and basic woodspirit face. It is my opinion from decades of teaching kids to carve that it is first important to master carving this very basic face with squinting eyes before challenging yourself to adding raised eyebrows, eyes, teeth, tongues, and infinite emotion and facial expressions.

Hopefully the videos will inspire the "aspiring" new carver to their first success in carving faces. But don't expect a masterpiece on the first few attempts as when I started carving faces it took me about 30 attempts before I was finally satisfied with the results. Good luck!

Great videos Dave; ..........Just this weekend I was asked by a lady to come to a scout meeting and show them how to carve a spirit in a walking stick,. I'll be recommending that they watch your videos.
Thanks for sharing
