Not sure this is what you are after, but borrow the ideas from Kolrosing. Prepare the wood first - sand/seal - then put in detail lines and rub some stain, or coffee grinds or coal dust into the detail - then rub excess off. Detail will stand out nicely. Similar to scrimshaw too. Check here for more details Kolrosing
