Default New tools for a beginner?

Guys, I am looking at getting some hand carving tools. I say the little shavers kit, but not if it is what I am looking for. I would love some feedback from you people that are more experienced that I...

Thanks,
Willie

Willie,

one of the hardest decisiond a beginning carver has is the decision of a direction they want to apply them selves to learn,
most of us started out the same as you, making sticks and wanting to do some relief carving,
if you plan to carve any detail into your sticks

if you e mail rick ,i will bet a steak dinner that he will give you all the advice (and more, a lot more ......lol) that you need. I don't think he will sell you something you don't need . if he knows what you are going to carve.

Go with Little Shavers. Good tools that don't cost a lot, and razor sharp and ready to carve when you get them.

I will throw my two cents in here even though I truly hope that by now your carving tools are on their way to you

For any beginner I always suggest an intermediate priced set of carving tools. Look for something in the $40 - $50 range for five to six tools. You know as well as I do that tools in this range will not be the best quality of steel or handle.

They are not meant to be. They are tools that will let you get started, experiment with wood carving and decide if this is the hobby that you want to continue with. Plus they will give you a taste of what each tool style does in carving as they usually include a round gouge, v-gouge and several different chisels.

After you try them and get hooked on carving like the rest of us you can add to your tool set with better quality tools specific for your style of work.

Even though these tools are considered "cheapies" I guarantee that if you continue carving you will continue using them.

I believe ... watch out I'm about to have a rigid opinion here .... more newbies get disappointed with carving early on because no one said "Hey, ya gotta have sharpening tools too!" I don't care how much you pay for a carving set or even one carving tool ... it is only as good as it's cutting edge. So, leave a little money in your initial tool kit budget for at the least a strop and hopefully stones too.

Susan

One of the hardest things for a new carver is to find the right tools at an affordable price then , learn how to sharpen them and keep them sharp, some books that I have read about old school wood carving apprentices, is that they learned to sharpen tools before they were allowed
to carve.
