I promise this is the first! The two others are unfinished, but similiar in form. I learned some of the carving techniques from the master carver at Dollywood, but this is the very first carving that I ever completed.

I agree, the forhead is somewhat squared off....I think it is because I was having trouble trying to get is rounded after I had already wasted the wood to create the forhead area.

I appreciate the advice and will try to round it off when I begin to rough it out!

Anyone who is within driving distance to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge can go to Dollywood and observe the carver there. He is an excellent teacher and great to give advice! That's where I first became interested in carving.

If anyone is interested in taking the spirit face carving class, contact Lee Warren at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. He doesn't require any previous experience and provides all the tools. It's definitely a great learning experience for anyone would would like to get involved in carving.

Thanks for looking!

Gee, I am trying to work my way up to carving a Santa Clause after 3 years.
That is a VERY good first carving. Please post the 2 others. What a treat to see some talent in the making.

Thanks Thor! The other two aren't completely finished yet, but they are in the sanding phase. I agree with coffeeman that I really need to work on getting the forehead and cheeks a little less square. I guess it is difficult for me to visualize when I am carving on the sharp angle of a triangle piece of wood. I'm sure with practice it will come.

I will see about getting pictures of them and getting them on here. I have to borrow a digital camera from my mother so it may be a couple of days.

I guess that is another investment that is coming down the road!!!

I don't think you should do a thing to that one! Leave it as it is, do another, and another lol. As for the flat forehead, nothing wrong with that, another rendition in the scandanavian flat plane style. imho

Blake, he's wonderful! I agree with everyone else, it's hard to believe this is your first carving!! If you're doing this well already, I can't imagine where you will be a year from now! Great job! Thanks for sharing him with us! Talking Deborah
