my guess is your tools were shipped to you presharpened. Most all quality carvers are shipped ready to go. any chance you can take a picture of the cutting edge of a couple of your chisels for posting here???

When using a gouge, I try to TWIST the gouge L/R as well as push. The twist slices the timber, the push isn't so gentle in its action. In difficult wood, the twist may be the better course of action BUT keep the gouge corners out of the wood as far as you can! |
