Default New project

I am novice carver. And have done some simple stuff in basswood and they look O.K.. I made a picture frame for my wife that turned our pretty good.
I want to make a carved mirror frame for my daughter. I have attached an idea I have in mind, but I was thinking what kind of wood should I use. The mirror size will be 18" x 24".
Any recommendations will be greatelly appreciated.

Thanks

Ed

You might want to post this question in another catagory, like woodcarving tips and techniques, maybe you'll get some replies. I'm guessing maybe there are mostly beginners checking this one.

Your wood wil be dictated by a few factors. One of these is the tools you have available. If you are very limited most of the exotics will be difficult for you. Your next factor wil be the overall look you are after. If you want a darker frame, walnut carves well. For a medium tone, perhaps butternut or cherry. Cherry carves well but is a bit harder. Basswood would be a bit bland. Your design has rather fine detail. Try to find a wood minimal less grain to make the details more pronounced. Personally, I'd lean to cherry.

Good luck,
Dan

Thanks for your reply. I have some good tools. I bought a set of Pfiel gouges, and have carved some smaller things in mahagony. My problem is getting some of the woods you describe. I have ordered Basswood , but I am not surer were to get butternut or Cherry. I'll check around and see if there is a local supplier.

Thanks

Ed
