Bill, those carvings look pretty good. Looks like you are well on your way. Before I can really give you some advice, however, I need to know a couple of things like...what kind of tools and wood are you using, and what subjects and projects would like to carver. back and I am happy to help you out!

Sounds to me like you are pretty well on your way, Bill. The only thing I can add right now is that if you feel the need add a few more of the FlexCut palm gouges to your list of tools. I too carve with the same tools you use and find them excellent to work with. Also I would start using basswood as your carving medium for your relief work. Its easy to carve, doesn't dull your tools too much, hold detail very well and can be finished in just about every way imaginable. Cottonwood bark is superior for carving wood spirits. It too is easy to carve, hold detail very well and finishes beautifully.

If you have the time and the wood.....Practice alot, carve several noses, eyes, mouths, etc. Each one that you carve try to improve on the next one. Dont be afraid to make deep cuts and try new things. You will find that your carvings will get better and better. The carvings that you posted for us look good for starting out. Dont get discouraged if a piece goes bad, carve it again and you will get it right. Just my thoughts...
