just take what is intresting to you and go from there,i try to always push myself, like the pirate i just finished,i drew that pattern and cut the blank, then stared at it for a month getting the nerve to try it,got to take the chances thats where the fun is in original carvings or art,it's yours and your idea so it can't be wrong,i've taken a few commissioned pieces that didn't really intrest me,and had to drudge through them, have since decided to try to take on pieces that i have an intrest in carving, you'll do a much better job also.

Ideas come from anywhere and anyplace at any time. I get these brilliant flashes sometimes just from watching clouds, or the shadows in a forest, or while reading to my grandson, or sometimes I'll look at something and try to figure out how I'd go about carving it in wood.

I can't always make it work, you understand, but I have fun trying.

I was hunting one day with an elderly friend and was really curious about the wool blanket that he carried with him but was to busy thinking of the hunt and where to put him so he could get a got shoot at a deer.
Well,
After it got light, I decided to scan the area with my binocs and while scanning the area, I hit on my elderly friend sitting with his back to the tree, with the woolblanket wraped around him . But the funny thing was, a deer was there also, sniffing my asleep friend. In tell in that story, I designed a carving with a small tree, a man asleep with a blanket wrapped around him with a deer, standing in fron of him sniffing.
That elderly man has since went to the big hunting ground above but his son has that carving and has it displayed.

Why the story? Some carves every day life situations. Every dau life can give you great ideas. Anothe ron is a man setting on a bench, reading a news paper with his legs stretched out in fron of him and another figure stumbbling over the stretched out legs.
How about a man standing at a Gas pump looking at a sign that says "Arm and a Leg Station". May not be interesting to some but I fiind them interesting concepts.

Kenny impressive story,

I agree some of the finest carvings and inspiration comes from those things that touch us or we see. It is knowing how to look that makes the difference.

I forgot to add to the first story that the deer got spooked somehow and ran away. When I climbed down from my tree, I ventured over to the elderly gentleman and he was awake. I asked him if he had seen any deer. his answer," Not a dern one today". I started laughing and had to tell him what I had seen. he said, "Ya know, Maybe that is why I don't have any luck any more, I fall asleep".
That is how the carving came abouit and given to him. But that elderly gentleman had more hunting save than anyone I knew.

Miss him Dearly.

Several years ago I was shopping with my sister and we walked out of a store into snow flurries --- she threw up her arms and shouted, "Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow."
