Default a new idea

i just discovered a new way to teach kids woodcarving sweet potatoes!!! using a popsickle stick slightly sharpened can teach kids basic fundamentals of wood carving assuring not cut fingers or splinters, just my opinion but arent kids great i taught a young fellow how to make a bait out of a sweet potato and he fell in love with it an hour ago his dad said he bought him a dozen sweet potatos so he practice before his next lesson,he is only 6 years old wish i had a mentor back then. anyways thought i would share a little tidbit of whats going on here....

Shade,
Kids are great. Not only is my son working on his lures, but my uncle brought his grandson (9) over a couple of weeks ago and spent half a day Saturday working with him. It is a real joy to work with kids. Soap works well also with younger ones and you can use plastic knives.
By the way how is the hunt for the wood going, have you found what you are looking for yet.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

That is a safe way to start youngans out carving. My daughter got her 1st knife at 5 and started on apples and sharpening sticks. At 6 or 7 she was using my chisels with hand protection and the carving clamped securely. But now she mostly paints. She threatened me not to touch her paints because of my messups.Tony
