Default new hobby

Hello all. I just started on a carving adventure. My father in law showed me a small pipe he made when he was around my age and I want to make him a new one. I have plenty of time to practice and I am not in any rush to finish this project. I can't find any good books or tools around this part of Illinois. I was wondering if anyone had any thing they would like to pass on. I would like to read some good how to books prior to getting started. Anyone have anything? I would be willing to send money orders or anything along those lines as well. I know there are videos on line but I like to read. Thanks guys! Have a good one.

I would find a carving club in your area they usally have a collection of books that you can borrow to read up on carving and it would only cost you a membership to use them . Mike

If you want to carve pipes I would suggest getting the book offered at Pipe Making Information and Supplies from PIMO Pipe Craft

Just remember, that the briarwood is a good deal harder than most carving woods especially if it is burled as most are.
I am merely stating this so one does not go out and become disappointed. Might try initial shaping and such with a softer piece of carving wood before trying the normal woods used in pipemaking.
