For most of my shaping I use a 1/4 horse power flexibile shaft power
carver that I bought from Harbor Freight Tools. It turns at 15000
rpm and the handpieca that comes with it can take bits up to 5/32 inch
shank. For mine, I bought a handpiece made by Foredom that will
take bits up to 1/4 inch shank.
Here is a link to whare I got it:

I will probably end up getting a Foredom flexible shaft carver eventually
because of its higher speed and because it is reversible.
For detailing I use a Ram Power 45 which turns at up to 45000 rpm
and is reversible.
I also have a Dremal with a flexible shaft that works well for light carving
and detailing.
