What do you want to carve???? I really would NOT recommend the dremel - instead opting for a good knife....BUT it depends on what you will be carving. Use the search function and type in "dremel" for more comments. |

Welcome to the forum so do you want to power carve if thats the case a dremel will do. there are books on power carving out there check fox chapel publishing .com for books on the subject. Nothing is better to put a knife in hand and create that is just my opinion .

Hello JT! I have to agree with Mitchell regarding purchasing a good knife to start carving with rather than a dremel. I use and love my dremel, one of best purchases I've ever made - great for a multitude of things, including carving, but a good knife is really difficult to beat as I'm sure others will agree. Rick Ferry sells a great 'starter kit' which includes a good beginners knife, carving glove, etc. to get you started safely and I would highly recommend that route prior to purchasing a dremel for carving. Besure and post a few photos of your work and share them with us as you carve - we'd love to see them! Thanks! Kenn

Hi JT, If you do decide on power carving a flex-shaft and foot control are a must (in my opinion) and you will still need a bench knife and gouge. Bill |

Hello and welcome, JT. Click on this link and it will take you to Rick's site. Little Shavers Wood Carving Supply Before you sink a lot into tools, you might want to search through the threads and look at different post on beginning carving, knives, rotary tools, etc. I know it can be a little overwhelming when you first start here, but don't hesitate to ask even if it's a simple question. We all started the same way you. Good luck.

Here are a couple links for you. If you have a carving club in your area that would help you to get started. Beginner's Carving Set at Little Shavers Wood Carving from Little Shavers Dave |

The first project should be easy and simple and more about getting the feel of the wood and tools. RonT posted a link to Little Shavers, click on Beginning Carver info then What should I carve first. I like the Pumpkin for a first project or you could even stack three like a snowman, I did one like that for a friend and she uses it for two holidays. |
