Default Need some advise

I have been carving for 3 to 4 years and have had some instruction. Im interested in traditional European Architectural carving. I am having a hard time finding patterns and books and anyother types of mediums to help me to advance my skills and eyes. I cannot find anyone close in the northwest to help me and the professionals only help when the checkbook is out, and it can be emptyed very quickly. Ha ha
I would appreciate any imput or advise that could help me pogress. thanks ds

I have seen a lot of books on that form of carving...but alas, I can't remember them! Except for Woodcraft ..get hold of their catalog, it seems to me there are a number of those books listed in the back of their catalog.

Dale
A good book to get on the subject is 'Manual of Traditional Wood Carving edited by Paul N. Hasluck; Dover Publications. It has 1,146 woodworking drawings and photographic illustrations. Its only sold in paper back now, but is still available. I refer to this book often for reference. Hope this helps.

I picked up a book called Classic Carving Patterns by L S Irish on Amazon a few months ago. Only about 10 or 12 bucks and it has alot of good Acanthus and Grape/Vine carving in it. You might want to take a look at it. Think you can find a good description of the book and maybe even a little peek inside of it at www.carvingpatterns.com

Don't know if this is what you are looking for or not.

Good Luck
Gene

For traditional wood carving try:
'Manual of Traditional Woodcarving' Paul N. Hasluck -editor
ISBN 0-486-23489-4
This is an editied version of an older book (Cassell's Wood Carving) but has a ton of drawings, pictures of architectural carving, furniture embellishments, etc. It should be available from Lee Valley Tools (www.leevalley.com).

good luck and good carving!

Haslucks' book is usually available on ebay for about $5 plus shipping. Fredrick Wilbur, Mike Davies, Dick Onians and Chris Pye have books with excellent sections on architectural carving. Mike Davies book has great patterns, 2 and 3-dimensional, along with pictures of the finished carvings.
