Default Need ideas for a stick

I think my practice carving can be taken to a slightly higher level. I have been learning to carve by doing small faces and heads on scraps of wood. My progress is slow but steady. Rather then continue to just do the faces and heads on scraps I am going to continue to practice but carve them on a cane or a stick. Any ideas of a theme type of stick where 18 to 24 faces could be incorporated? Thanks TOM H

Cowboys, or Indians or Santas, or Gnomes, or doctors, or dentists, orteachers, or preachers, or Eagles, or lions, tigers, or bears, oh my.
Hey, How about one each. Definitely a different kind of cane or stick.

Even a logger, or a lawyer or a nurse, or even a carver.

^^^ What Ken said.

How about you figure out a short story, then carve the characters from that story on your cane/walking stick? Something like the totems of the northwest.

Each face could be an attempt at carving a family member, oldest to youngest...you don't have to tell THEM that's who the faces ae supposed to be! They could either be caracatures or attempts at accuracy...might even be one or two that you could carve two faces on opposite sides of the stick! Maybe you don't have anyone in your family tree with two, though....

I just did a stick with 20 faces on it. What I did was wrapped a vine in among them as I went down. The beard of the first top one was the hair of the second one swirling its way down the stick. Each beard became the hair of the next one down going under the vine as they decend. Its different. LOL

Marci, how bout a photo? Sounds like fun. All these ideas sound like fun. Only one problem. I be a real beginner, and I need lots of practice. Maybe faces only to start. And generic faces at that. Thanks for the ideas. TOM H

I agree Marci love to see a picture of that cane. I just completed one with 30 faces in it I sure get a lot of comments on it. Here are some pictures of one Tom I have in progress at the moment. It is a Haida stick. The Haida are west coast native people. The stick is native and also animal in theme. Here are some pictures of eleven symbols I have done in the cane so far. As to final # who knows each burning and carving is a learning experience. From Top to bottom as follows. Bald Eagle, Raven, Grizzly Bear,Sun,Killer Whale, Dragonfly, Beaver, Otter, Puffin, Bear and Cub, Bee, and Owl. The eagle is carved the others are burned and painted.

Great idea for a walking stick Colin, the burnings are just fantastic. You're just full of new ideas these days! Must be the effects of the rondezvous?

Neat stick Colin! Where did you find the reference material (pictures) of all the symbols? Dave
