Default Need help with a paint mixing problem.

Finished my duck hunter, but am having a problem with the barrel and receiver of the shotgun. Can't get the color right. Have tried a number of different mixes but haven't come up with the right combo yet. Anybody have any idea how to get the gun metal blue color I'm looking for. Am using Ceramcoat Acrylic's, but will try any other brand I can lay my hands on if it works. If somebody says the color is available premixed I'm gonna scream.

Just take a scrap of wood and keep playing with variations of white black and blue, you will get the right combination

Ed,
I paint Warhammer models, and they have a paint color called boltgun metal. It's a blueish black with a hint of silver; is that what you're looking for? If so, I'll look up their site and get that too you.

I use a mixture of 'Graphite' by Americana and midnight blue.

Bob and Rick thanks will try both of them and use the one I like the best. Never hurts to have extra colors around. I've got plenty of time, won't need it till Christmas. Present for my son-in-law a died in the wool duck hunter. Got the hunter standing there with his gun in one hand and a coot in the other saying 'You sure it not a mallard?'

Might try 'Payne's Gray' fo those barrels. I't blue-black and might be just what you are looking for.

More than likely you know this, but thought it might not hurt to throw it in. After you seal the wood, paint it white. The color will be easier to achieve with the white back ground.

I painted a thin wash of black over a thin coat of blue irridescent for a blue metal look. Once I got the look I wanted, 2-3 coats of the black wash, I let it dry, sealed it, then buffed it to a luster with a piece of wadded up brown paper bag.

Some of the other techniques sound good too. This is a good example of there being more than one way to achieve a particular result.

Thanks to Y'all ... certainly gonna be a busy guy for awhile, cause I'm gonna try the all. And, Hugh; thanks for the white base-coat tip, never heard or thought of it. Am pretty much of a neophyte at this painting thing (no kidding, huh).

Ed,
The website ishttp://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/.
You might need to click on the british flag to get english. Then click on the model and miniature colors.

Hope it helps
