Unhappy Need advice with first project

I'm trying to carve out a wand from a branch about two thumbs in diametre. The branch was found on the ground but it must have broken off recently because it was still quite fresh.
I wanted to thin out the one end so that it tapers down into a semi point, but my boyfriend says that it will probably split. So I'm at a little of a loss as to how to continue with my project.
Can anyone offer me some advice, please and thank you!

Hi Rowan, If you put the stick in a plastic bag or wrap it in plastic & keep drawing the moisture out slowly it will not usually crack much or at all. If you just leave it out in the open & it dries to quickly this is what will cause cracking. Hope this helps?
Thanks, Robbin

Beautiful spirit sticks, Slather.
I was thinking of doing one as well. Is there any type of wood that you would recommend?
