Just another opinion here but my folks lived in NC and there was a sawmill that had local basswood nearby. So I bought 100 board feet of the stuff, (mostly 6x6 inches by about 8 feet) hauled it home, spent time and effort stacking it with spacers, painting the ends of the logs with wax for even drying and waited 3 years for it to dry. It was the worst wood I have ever tried to carve and I ended up burning it in our woodstove during the winter.

The best basswood comes from a lot farther North, where they have really cold winters. IL, has some good basswood, so does Maine. I imagine any of those Northern states or Canada, has excellent basswood. But in my opinion, Southern basswood is not worth fussing with. I'll never buy any again.
