Default nameplates

Hello all, I would like to be given some advice on making small name plates for the grandchildrens bedroom doors for example "BEN'S ROOM" or "Keep Out" type of signs how should I procede? I have a set of carving chisels and the wood is no problem. However I won't be using whole trees to start with.

I don't do signs (yet). But there is an excellent article in the current issue of Woodcarving Illustrated on sign basics.

Or you might check the library for a good book. I know Chris Pye covers the subject in some of his books.

Hope you enjoy your experience.

Welcome aboard Allejo, you can have a lot of fun with signs. They don't have to be fancy , and they are great ways to become familiar with your tools and wood. Draw the sign you want onto a piece of paper, and trace it onto a board. Cut out the shape with a coping saw, or scroll saw or band saw and then round the edges with your carving tools, and carve the letters and image. Perhaps for Ben's room a sign with a bear and call it "Ben's Den". No limit to the kind of signs you can come up with.

Good luck and have fun with it.

Bob
