Default My second carving is done

Hello all,

Just thought I'd share with you my second ever carving and my first ever Santa. It is a skiing Santa from a Tom Wolfe pattern, basswood 6' high. There are a couple pictures on the picturetrail site in the holiday album. Thanks for looking and hope you all have a wonderful, safe 4th of July. Beeguy

P.S. I just want to thank all of you once again for this forum. I can't tell you how much I am learning from you experienced carvers. My goal is someday after doing step-by step carvings from patterns is to learn and develop my own style of carving and hopefully to do original carvings of my own. But I know I need to take small steps (or chips) first.

I made a mistake in my first posting about my second carving (skiing Santa). I said that he was from a pattern by Tom Wolfe. Actually, it was not from a pattern per say but from Tom's technique on carving a Santa. I just thought I would correct myself. Beeguy

Very nice job on your first Santa, Beeguy! Just be careful, Teri warned me Santa carving could be addictive and she was right!! Callynne

Beeguy,
Nice carving, as Callynne said Santa carving is addictive I ended up with a whole bunch before I gave them all away as Christmas presents. May I say your first carving is a lot better than my first carving mine really didnt look like a santa more like a woodspirit.

Boy, santa carving is addictive. About a year ago I carved strictly birds. I never would have thought that I'd be carving santas. I even added a Santa Gallery to my website in anticipation of carving many more.

I'm about half way through my first wood spirit too. I'm already thinking about my next one.

I must thank everyone on this forum for opening my eyes to all of the other forms of carving. It's all of you that inspired me.

Thanks,
Chris

Yes, isn't this site just the greatest?? We're looking forward to seeing more of your Santas, not to mention any other carvings you do too! Keep up the good work! Callynne

Bill,

You are right. Before I had finished my first Santa I had already thought about and started my second Santa which I have just finished. Do most carver's do that do you think? It's from a Ron Ransom pattern, basswood, 7' high. I just posted pictures of it on http://www.picturetrail.com. I experimented with acrylic washes with it. I then dipped it in Watco oil (natural). After it dried I signed and dated it and then gave it two coats of Krylon matte finish spray. I like an acrylic wash look better than what I did with my first Santa. I guess I'll just keep experimenting with different finishes for awhile though to learn and to find what works best for me. Thanks for looking.

Well, I better go and get the grass mowed while my 2 yr. old son is napping.

Beeguy
