Default My first works

These are my first works done with a Dremel. The Skull is still a work in progress and I still have some burning to do on both.

Nice work with the Dremel. You've got good control.

Thanks for the encouraging feed back. I must say I am my own worst critic and I always, Always believe I can do better. That is my outlook in whatever I do from my Job (Chef-Manager, which helps explain my creative streak & Love of carving) to sports, to cultivating my family. I look forward to completing the skull and posting the picture of my best work to date.

Always believe the best is yet to come and you'll never be a failure.

That appears to be shaping up to be a walking staff, correct? If so, its going to be impressive when finished.

Patrick,

Your signature photo is very impressive, That's the level of quality I'm striving for. Any tips? What type of wood is best to use for walking sticks? Where can I find it..The Woods, Lumber Yard, Craft Store? What hand tools are "must have" on a limited budget?

Hey Danny,

The tip you'll read on the board over and over is to keep practicing. If you ever get a chance to work with a seasoned carver, it will be well worth your time. One of the members here on the board, Mark Gargac, has some helpful tutorials and CD/DVDs. There are other members here also with good information...it depends on the style of carving you prefer.
I'm new to carving walking sticks so I have only used basswood (which is not real strong for staffs), birch (which I like), and poplar. The one basswood staff I made was purchased but the rest I found in the wild.
As for tools...I would recommend Pfiel swiss made tools as I have had great experience with these, however, members may suggest others as well. Pfiel are not cheap due to their quality. I would suggest a few good tools rather than a full set of second rate tools. Nothing more frustrating than poor quality tools. Hope this helps Danny. Good luck with your stick.
Patrick
