Default My first woodspirit

Here is my first attempt at carving something other than a spoon or fuzz stick for kindling. I messed up on the mouth really bad but that is what practice is for.

I'm just a beginner myself but I see there is still plenty of wood there to fix it.

That's a fine start there. Looks like you got the basic facial shapes correct. As GearDog said, you've got plenty of wood there so if you're not happy with it you can always go deeper (just shave down the mouth area, then redo your stop cuts for the mustache and the upper lip & try again. Or - there's always set this one aside as your first attempt and start a new one. After all - they're only sticks. BUT - keep it. It's great to go back after a few more to see how you've progressed.

Cheers

Hi and Congratulations on your first Woodspirit, one of many more to come and with each one you will see improvement. We all were where you are now and all it takes is to keep practicing just as you have done.

Nice work on your first woodspirit! I wish that you could have seen my first one. Just keep at it and keep studying anybodys face that you see every day. Study their noses, the wrinkles, the countours, and eyes and you will gradually "get it". It took me about 30 woodspirits before I was finally satisfied with my results.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi rnorth,

Good first try. You didn't mess up as badly as you think you did. Improvements will come. Just keep practicing.

I use a mirror alot when I carve woodspirits.Even a book on drawing faces is helpful for me. I also stare at my husband when he's watching TV. Also go to the gallery here and check out others woodspirits.

I'm just starting out also. I want to do a wood spirit but don't have enough know how yet. I would be very proud if my first attempt turns out half as good as yours. You should be very proud of yourself. Just think, if it was easy it wouldn't be any fun. It's the challenge that keeps folks trying for that elusive trout.
