Nick,
I think you did a nice job on your first carving. I use a water based clear coat in either satin or gloss depending upon the look that I want. Sometimes I will use both to give certain effects. I use satin on clothes and flesh tones, I put gloss on things that would be shiny like black santa boots or the eyes.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

Hi Nick, agree with the rest of the folks you did a super job of carving and painting. If you wish a non-shinny finish then Deft Satin spray lacquer is good. If you want a little more shine then Deft Simi Gloss spray lacquer looks nice too.

Mottles to I have to put anything else on top of those finishes or is that all that goes on the piece of wood.

That's a great first carving. I like it so much I might have to give it a try. What size is it?

The Deft is a final finish. You spray it on after the paint is dry (I usually let the paint dry overnight), and you don't have to put anything on top of it.
