| | My first project. As you can see, I'm also a car fan. This is my first carving. It's a 1955 MGTF I restored a few years ago. I began it just whittling with my pocket knife and now I've gotten interested in actually learning how to carve, so I thought I'd go back to it and try to finish it. I bought a couple knives (Stubai and Cape Forge) and they really help. I welcome any criticism or suggestions. The wood is a 200 year old piece of pine so it's very hard... and even had a couple old cut nails in it when I started. Don't ask me why I chose it to start with. Thanks for any help.

| | Re: My first project. Looks like a good start! I remember those old cars, I had later ones, Triumph Spitfire and GT6+, brother had a MG Midget. Tried a TR4A once, but the steering wheel was too big for my liking.
Good shape on the MGTF. Keep up the good work.

| | Re: My first project. Like Bob, I had Triumphs - a TR4, and a TR-250. Your carving looks pretty good, especially considering it looks like a piece of construction lumber you're working on. In my opinion, pine and douglas fir are two of the most difficult woods to carve. The alternating very soft and very hard grain makes it really difficult.

| | Re: My first project. Well I've got to chime in as well. Seems carvers are a bunch of British car fans. I too had a few, a 52 TD, 2 midgets and a Healy.
For a first project you did well. I think you captured the essence of the car. A car has it's own problems to deal with as does anything else you carve. The symmetry and compound curves you had to deal with were handled well. Getting the tires in there had to give you fits. Now I'm sure you see why others just add separate tires and wheels!. You could have carved the car Bonnie and Clyde took their last ride in. Those little worm holes could have passed for the bullet holes as they're the right scale!
Good job,,must have been fun. |

| | Re: My first project. Thanks for all the comments eveyone. Mark you must be right. I had Healeys, Triumphs, etc. as well. Just now I'm restoring an old VW Bug and I'm thinking of carving it next. I think I'm hooked.. Jerry | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
