Ok, this isn't actually my first letters in life, but in wood they are new for me. I'm waiting for my new tools I've ordered so I took my old tool and went down in the basement, 1,5 hours later this is my result =) This is the first time I've carved for real and I can see how the time just flies away. There will be alot of time before I can handle this but damn, it was funny. Even with a bad tool that I tried to sharpen myself ![]() If you have any tutorials/tips on carving letters please let me know. (I've watched this tutorial with T.J. McDermott already) Last edited by Hi_Ho_Sliver; 09-10-2007 at 04:06 PM. |

Those came out pretty nice! What kind of wood? While not a video tutorial, the ever-popular Chris Pye has a pretty exhaustive book on the subject of carving letters in wood. RussL. |

Thank you very much for pointing me to Chris Pye! And thanks for the comment. All I know about the wood is that it is oak, not what kind of oak. You who knows, is oak an easy material to work with? |

From looking at the cuts in the wood, I'd say your bad tool isn't so bad and your attempt at sharpening was pretty good. I don't see any torn fibers, etc. And your letters aren't bad either, considering they are your first attempt. Letters are not an easy thing, at least not for me.

(Arrg, long post vanished so I try again) Thank you very much for your kind words EdO. I hope the tool that I'm using at the moment is bad so that I can feel a difference in the new tools I've ordered =) (ordered tools) I can tell y'all that my interest started with a growing love for handcrafted wooden signs. I love signs in general but there is something special with the handcrafted ones. My goal with it so far is just to get started and see how good I can get. Inspirations for me is signs like this that I found on this forum in this thread: --> CLICK HERE FOR THREAD ![]() Match-the-sign-with-the-surrounding-thinking is something I like. Ok, now you know something more about me. |

Well done on your first letters! All I can offer for advice is to stay with it and practice. There are some good lettering books, and some general carving books with lettering carving, in them, including Chris Pye's. I bought a 3 ring binder from Lee Valley on lettering when I began, and it had a great article included on carving letters. Practice, practice, is you best option. More you do, the faster you'll learn. Glad you liked the pub sign! Bob

Welcome to the band of letter cutters and congratulations on your first attempt. Dont worry too much about tools just keep them sharp and keep your corners crisp. Peter Connor |
