Default My first carvings

Here is a picture of the real first carving I completed with colors and all. While I was finishing the carving, my wife felt in love with it and named it "Captain Doudou". So I had to give it to her...

This is the second real carving I did. I sanded it a bit after painting it to give a well worn look.

I have a few other practice pieces but I never really completed them.

Thanks for looking,

Gilles

Those are really good. Did you use basswood for them?

Gilles, these are both great, but I really like your boot...I did one when I starting not too long ago, however yours came out much better. The sanding added a lot to the finnish. Bill

Thanks...

Yes, this is basswood for the first one. The Captain is from a from a 3"x3" (or 4"x4"???) piece of basswood but the boot is from a scrap of 1 3/4" butternut I had from a guitar I built.

Btw, here are 2 of the non-completed carvings I made a bit before.

This is a horse head I began for my sister. It is from pine and I kind of lost interest after a while. You can see my best fan beside it. Her nickname is ... "Doudoune".

And this was supposed to be another horse head for a walking cane. The knife slipped just before I was getting ready to take a photo... I took the photo anyway and sent it to my sister to show her how hard I was trying to carve her a horse head. I try keep it close to remind me to wear gloves, something I had problems remembering until yesterday .

I worked a bit more on both of them after that but never finished them.

Gilles

Gilles you are well on your way to be a good carver.....the carvings are well done.........just so you don't die from infection...... or come up missing fingers ....or spend a lot of wasted time in emergency rooms.............learn to wear a good carving glove.

If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert , in five years there'd be a shortage of sand.
