Default My first carving show

Went with my daughter to the Artistry in Wood show in Dayton, Ohio last weekend.

Some of the pieces were so fantastic, that I can only describe them as museum quality. Truly inspiring.

Many were technically very good, but lacking in artistic vision. I think that this is about what I could aspire to.

I have a long way to go to be as good as these guys! We had a great time.

I've been to a couple local carving shows, and I've found two really great things. First, the shows are inspiring. As you said, many of the carvers are excellent. Second, almost to a person the carvers are helpful, and are willing to answer questions. There's plenty of accumulated knowledge at a carving show, and you only need to ask in order to learn.

And, there's usually some nice deals to be had on tools and wood! I guess that makes three great things.

I took my 7 y/o son to the Viking woodcarver show a few weeks ago in St Paul. One carver had a beautiful painted turtle he had carved. My son asked me if it was real. I told him he better ask the man where he caught the turtle. The carver heard me say this to my son, and played along.
