Default My first attempt

Here it is my first attempt. Its not good and I know its not. I made some cuts that ruined what was looking good. Tried to fix things and this is what I ended up with.

<a href="http://s1113.photobucket.com/albums/...t=100_0675.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/...s/100_0675.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I want to preserve this as a reference to look back on to show where my skill level started. Best thing to seal bass wood? Spray on lacquer? I might want to try painting it as well. Not sure.

Let me know what you think.

Matt

Deft spray is good. Or I also dip or brush-on polyurethane and then wip off excess with a paper towel. You could also use a mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. I have my first carving too.

Mike,
Thanks for the info. I am just curious. Was your first attempt good? Did you paint it or just seal it up?

Thanks Herb! I started trying to make one thing but it started taking other shapes so I tried to make the best of it.

Don't be too hard on yourself...

It is very easy to look at some of the works posted here and start to beat yourself up. The absolute worst mistake you can make is to give up......Everybody that has ever posted anything here???? had to start somewhere. Your "start" is not terrible.

I asked an old duck carver one time...( not an "old duck"...it was the carver that was really, really old) how many he had carved to get one that looked good. He said "they stop looking scary after the first 100". I got the chance to sit at his bench with his tools and be guided by his hands, what an experience. The best advice I walked away with?? sharp tools...keep carving...
Seems very appropriate, still today..

It looks great for a first time!!! You'll be surprised at how a coat of paint can change things. My first carving was a Santa and painting it really made it look better!

Thank you everyone for the kind words! I will keep carving for sure. I actually started a Santa that when it is finished will be about 6 inches high. My significant other told me that this was ambitious for only having done one carving so far. She thinks I should have done a few more faces first before trying a whole body etc. I will see what happens. Again, I appreciate all the kind words from everyone and the advice.

My friend: You have to walk before you run.. We have to start somewhere and so far your off to a very good start.. When times get tough, just keep on keeping on and never give up on a carving. Good luck :-)
