Default My first anything ever!

This is my first anything ever. I ordered a bunch of wood and some pre-shaped animals from a site online and decided to work on the squirrel for my son. I got to a point and realized at this level, it was the best I was going to be able to do. I'll pick it up again once I'm a bit more comfortable with my knives and detail work. Here are a few pics.

They're a little whitish because I hit them with the sand paper to smooth some edges a bit. I'd really appreciate any feedback and thoughts you may have on ways to improve.

Congratulations! You are on your way! As for suggestions, one thing that comes to mind is you might want to separate the tail from the neck and back area a bit more. It will make the tail stand out more and give more definition to the back of the body around the shoulders.

That is just fine. Well done. Remember not to sand until you think the carving part is over. Sometimes, sandpaper grit gets stuck in the wood and will kill off your knife/tool.

I think you're off to a great start. Just keep at it and don't give up on yourself. Practice makes perfect and remember if you mess it up...it's just a piece of wood. There's plenty more where that came from!

Looks great! Keeping it simple as you learn is a good plan – it's very easy to get frustrated trying to keep up with the talent and skill of some of the advanced carvers here, trust me!
