Cool Re: My attempt at carving a figure

That's a good start but you need to take him out of the square, he has to many flat sides.

Hey Troutbum, nice start. I agree w' Carl, the edges need just a little rounding.

What kind of wood is it?

When are you coming to So. Cal?

Nice start, just don't rush and take your time. Don't be a scared to round a little more. My first carving looked like a square with a pointed head. Wife has it stashed in the storage shed or else I would share it.
The biggest problem I noticed was the flat head.
But other than that nice first figure carving

It's basswood with a linseed oil finish. I agree with the rounding. The better half starts work the 20th of this month ( Irvine), and the kids and I will follow as soon as we find a house.

Good start, Trout Bum!
Since he has a flat head, carve him a hat.

You are on your way! It looks like you have gotten some good advice about the rounding. And I think the hat is a great idea.

Be sure to save this one because you will be surprised how much you will improve in the next few months. Keep up the good work.
