Default Most Complete Study Stick

I am new to carving and have a few books and videos. Each helps show a technique but its hard to duplicate it without seeing it in person. I've searched the internet for study sticks and have come across quite a few, woodcraft, enlow, johnson and so on.

From the pictures it looks like some are better than others in that they dont make BIG leaps from step to step. Additionally, some seem to come with instruction books.

What are the most complete study sticks from a step by step perspective on the stick and from a included instruction perspective?

Are there any that correspond to a movie/DVD? That would seem the best of both worlds.

Thanks!

That is a GOOD question! I'm hanging around waiting on the answers. I've bought a couple and have been disappointed. Seem to learn more just by making my own. There have to be some good ones out there.

I have 2 wood spirit sticks from Skyler (Sp?) Johnson and they are very well done. The small one goes to his book on carving spirits in sticks and is a resin model of the finished carving and it shows how to change it up a lot. The other is a large 5 or 6 step of a very detailed face. He also has several eye and nose etc. study sticks out. I know that Mountain Carvers sell them.

A study stick is a carving in progress--with each stage of the carving in one stick.

It probably is easier to make your own but the problem is new people can't and sometimes, even the experienced people have trouble visualizing how a carving is done. But making your own is good practice because you do the roughing stage 4 times, the detailing stage, 3 times, the fine detailing stage 2 times, and the finishing stage once.

Keoma, here's a link to a study stick......Woodcarving Study Sticks - Woodcraft.com

There are many different types, ears, eyes, full faces, hands, santas, noses, etc. Most comercial ones are resin casts of ones made by professional carvers.

From my experience I bought one study stick a long time ago and it was helpful but then I bought Mary Finns book carving egg heads and she had you make a study stick for eyes, one for the nose and one for the mouth I found this more helpful even though I don't carve eggs much anymore.
