I have a caribou antler at the house in the closet of my shop that I got in Alaska. I saw a lot of this type carving up there, and when I got an opportunity to get an antler, I picked it up.

Nice job.

Those are great carvings.
I heard that antlers smell bad when you carve them, is that true

I have turned some antler pens, and they smell like burning hair/nails. I am pretty sure that it would not smell bad with gouges, but when you add friction...

Great looking antler carvings Leonard. You're gonna love the Foredom! But you'll still want the dremel type for the detailing, and a handful of small needle files. That's what I used on the few moose antlers I've done. Now's a good time to pick up some sheds from the bogs too. Sounds like you're in a good spot with a healthy crop of moose. Good luck with more carving.

Just remember that the dust is bad for you. do wear a good quality mask. Mine is from Lee Valley. I also use eye and ear protection. What bits are you using?

Hello Leonard,
Great job on the carving.
Any input I could add would only be in my personal taste in carving moose antler.
Your carving is great on its own legs; buuuuut....if it were me carving; I'd be inclined to sand the edges of the frame of the carving to blend into the rest of the antler.
I'd also be inclined to use a wash of burnt umber, then sanded down with fine steel wool to make the carving more integral in color to the rest of the antler.
Here's a picture of a moose head I carved with the burnt umber wash I mentioned.

This guy has tons of antlers of all kinds including moose. It's a great resource.
Take care
Greg

I have had the good fortune to examine 40 or 50 very good pieces of antler carving, done by a carver of considerable skill. You are on the right track, your animal realism is excellent.
