Hi, I'm new and am looking to carve some small (4"ish) 2D medallions for the front of a window box. Any ideas? I'm ideally looking for instructions but pictures would be ok too. I have checked google images but I've very little luck. Thanks for your help |

Any idea as to the type of medallion as far as theme or direction? The variety is endless. Almost any type design could be incorporated. Leaves, flowers, geometrics, figures. Is there a theme you'd like to follow. A natural of course for a window box would be flowers,,but depending on the style,,geometrics could work. Check in some bookstores in the art section and there is a line of books with design and patterns ,,there are more ideas there than you can possibly use. Also look around your house there are repeat patterns or designs you could easily use. A pattern in a lace doily, one in a rug,a curtain design with a pattern, one in a wallpaper pattern, something carved into a piece of furniture, patterns on a dress, cloth, etc. Designs you can use are probably all over your house. Or just use one of your favorite flowers or one that will be in the box and carve that in the medallion. With a bit of imagination and a little looking you'll find plenty of design possibilities. |

dee, Lora Irish has lots of relief-type patterns in some of her books--and Cipa and Lora collaborated on a book on wood spirits and green men that has some possible ideas. You might even google for architectural and traditional wood carvings for possibilities; things like leaves and acanthus (spelling?) designs. If it is on a window box, relief patterns with flowers and leaves would be cool. Donna T

I think that what I really want might be called rosettes. I'd like something fairly simple but would love to do flowers and leaves too...
