Default master woodcarver ???

What constitutes a "Master Woodcarver"? Is there some certification one gets that recognizes different levels of competency or is it a title one assumes after so many years practicing the art?

Curious!

In Britain, I believe that the apprenticeship still exists in the direction of a "Journeyman's Ticket".
Something in the back of my mind tells me that "Master" is the level above that. Perhaps like a D.Sc. degree (beyond PhD), conferred in recognition of a career body of work(s).
Back here, Charles Edenshaw, Mungo Martin, Bill Reid and ?? Davidson would qualify if sales, status and recognition were criteria. Might be a tough call to separate from public popularity.

even if he has been practising for so many years, but has not even learned any single thing, he could still be a novice.
