Yes they are good and they hold an edge. It seems to be a little late now to ask....you already purchased them. ![]() How about evaluating and letting US know what you think. That way, the next time at least there will be an answer. You can use the search function on this site to find previous posts on these tools... click on "Search" on the bar near the top of the page and enter "Marples". You'll find some posts discussing these tools....maybe not much, but there will be some. |

Many years ago my sister gave me a Marples sculptors set They had blue plastic handles socket style and most were fish tail. I still have them I found them to be too thick and heavy I prefer Henry Taylor an English made tool as well.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the older ones are made in England but some of the newer ones were made somewhere else and weren't as good . Let us know how they work out .

I may be wrong, but I think that Marples and Irwin are the same company, and you see a lot of Irwin tools in hardware stores these days, and they seem to be made in China. Now, are Marples tools also made in China now, I couldn't say, but I also saw Marples tools recently in a Rona or one the these hardware stores, and they looked better than the Irwin tools I saw. I am also interested in how you find them. Oh, and I remember seeing somewhere on the net that somebody resharped or at least honed them to make them very sharp. But I don't remember the site... Shane, Looks like you have got yourself a nice set of gouges! What a find! Back in the mid 70's I bought a few Marple gouges and chisels. They have held up nicely over the years and do keep a sharp edge. Record / Marples also made some really good woodworking tools. Too bad the U.K. foundry went out of business.
