Hey JC, as a relatively new carver myself, I've built a pretty large book collection already. Some are for the future, as I get better.

I find myself going back and using a couple Ron Ransom books more than any other. His books are very easy to read and understand and he's got lots of pictures to let you visualize what he's doing. Being new, you might find his books to be a great starting point.

Like the others said, make sure you get a glove and thumb protector! They've saved me countless times.

In all the years that I've carved, (about 30) I don't remember cutting myself while using chisels, but I have while using a knife. So I believe chisels are the safest.

I'd recommend using the search function and look for "beginner tools" or "recommended tools" to see what's already been posted in the past.
