there will be as many answers to your question as there are responders--maybe more as many of us have several opinions-- my advice is to get a good quality asst of tools-- you can easily invest several hundred dollars or more in this- are u going to burn in the feathers? this will require a wood burner-- and not the type most of us had as kids. mine was 175 and its middle of the road. my best advice is to find an instructor and follow his guide lines

No burner needed. Going to incorporate it with some taxidermy work. Let me put it this way. Can I get anything worth sharpening for $75 ??

Aaron...as Chuck mentioned above...Ric's Beginning Carving Kit is a great way to start...you can make your own honing strop/sharpening tools cheaply as you need them...just besure and get a good carving glove and a thumb/finger protector and use them! Get a good safe start and practice, practice, practice...but above all, have fun with your new hobby and don't forget your fellow carvers here at the WCI Forum...lots of great carvers and experience to help 'newbies' like you and myself out when we need them...

Just to add to Kenn's (old codger) list, if you sit and carve like I do you might want to get a leather apron. Makes cleaning up chips easier and adds a little protection from a falling knife, gouge etc.

Dave

BTW - www.littleshavers.com is the way to go.
