S&W was offering a set of woodcarving tools for carving gunstocks. They are sometimes found on Ebay (found some - item 260390347131) Of course I don't know how good "Chrome vanadium steel blades" are.

I would suppose that if S&W sold hand tools for stock carving then...

I am certainly no expert, but I wanted to experiment with carving gun stocks as well. I got an old shotgun cheap and got started. All I had was a bench knife I got years ago, and I used a metal tipped dart for stippling. (All I could find ) It is no where near the carved gun stocks I have seen, but I am very pleased with it. Getting started, knowing there is no turning back, is the hardest part. Good Luck and Have Fun

I looked at the subject tool kit & from my experience it contains gouges a beginner might never use, at the price, I would suggest a Murphy knife, a 3/16 V gouge, a 3/16 U gouge, glove ,duck tape thumb guard. super fine diamond [5.95] paddle, & go to work. Use the left over money to buy gouges as you find a need.

Jerafter; I would be well pleased if my first attempt turned out as good as yours. Your comment: "getting started, knowing there is no turning back, is the hardest part."; sure does have the ring of truth to it; it also sure did make me smile in understanding.
Old Scout; I will take your suggestion; as I have many others since this thread started. Lots of positive thinkers here with some darn good advice; and I do love that attitude! Thanks to all and please keep those positive ideas and suggestions coming; I am saving them all; cuz I do have a ton to learn before I start hacking on a perfectly good gun stock.
