If by larger you mean wider, that's the progression I've followed. One of Chris Pye's 101 carving "secrets" is to use the biggest tool possible, and I agree. Most starter sets have narrow gouges and veiners, 1/8" - 1/4", and you'll find wider tools useful. I carve more with gouges now than with a knife. You can remove a lot of wood with a #7 or #9 x 3/8" or 1/2" in the roughing stage. Mike

Mike, I have a set of the 1/2" Denny gouges that Rick sells, and would not hesitate to recomend them. They come razor sharp, and hold their edge for a long time. In addition to the 1/2" size, there are some available in 1/4",3/8" and 3/4" inch as well. Top quality tools in my opinion. Happy Carving, Dan Heine |

That is what I am in the market for, somethng that will help remove wood quicker in the rough out stage, the set I got from Rick works great, but would like something to remove stock, just to get it out of the way...most of the carvings I have done, and maybe plan to do, is woodspirits, which I really like, and the sizes of those are from cane size to medium, can someone recommend gouge sizes, maybe a few tools to add to the beginners set, for medium work, the beginners set takes a while to remove stock...I was thinking maybe a larger gouge, maybe something flatter?....a larger V tool?....any input is appreciated...tks in advance...Dennis

I'm a complete noob and have absolutely no carving experience. But I have carved/am carving out a chair seat and removing a good deal of wood using an adze. The one I use is quite broad and shallow, but there are smaller, tighter adzes available for making bowls. Could this work? |

I have a #7 3\4 inch sweep with a palm handle that takes out alot of wood fast. I used it for years before jumping up to a full set of flexcuts standard chisels. Has my carvings started getting larger so did my tools. Good luck!
