Your tree looks like Butternut ? How hard was the wood to carve ?

It carved like Douglas Fir, but is to light in color. The wood came from a 70+ year old flat belt idler pulley stand, about 4' tall. It is very nice wood, with a super straight grain!

I wouldn't think it would have been Butternut then - I would have thought maybe a hardwood like ash or oak for the pulley. It's nice whatever it is.

Yes the pulleys are oak, but this is made from the stand. It is not hard enough to be oak or ash, it does not really matter as long as it's cheap!( I paid $1.00 for the stand)

I would think the stand would also be made of a 'harder' wood just from all the support it would have to provide. Do you have a picture of it ? Minus the chunk you used to make your tree.
