| | Learning Curve You know with each new step , I look back on what I could have improved, changed, made eaiser or just made a better carving on the pieces I have done. Sometimes you just have to go back and make adjustments because you find something would really make a big difference.
I just posted a modified picture where to me this was needed and I returned to what I had thought to be finished work and made a major change in the carving . Hope you all agree that it really improved and changed the carving .

I think one of the great things about carving is when you go back years later and look at your early works. This is a craft were you can see so much improvement over time ... each piece seems to be just a tad better than the last.
My earliest carvings were cane topper wood spirits that I still have. Those poor things are so square, I was so concerned about doing noses and eyes that I never really got the corners knocked off

I have to agree. The is a change that takes place with each step. Changing Turner after finishing Kyd, well it is something I had to do. Now the Virginia Landscape behind him just really makes him so much more than what the was. I have had people coming into my office , where both Turner and Kyd are now and talk to me while staring at them. They say Turner's eyes just follows them.
I don't think I would go back and change many of the things I have done, but I do sometimes think it is necessary to realise that sometimes , it is just the right thing to do.

| | Re: Learning Curve Ash....I love the changes you made. They add so much to the tone of the carving. Gives it a much more "finished" and dignified look. Well done sir.

I try to advance my carving ability with each new piece.
My learning curve is 24/7, we are never done learning, and the real truth is, "we don't know what we don't know."
For me, I'm amazed at how far I have come in four years, and really excited about what yet is to be released from within.
Ash.....your headed in the right direction......keep the carvings coming! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
