Default Last practice project

This is my first attempt at making something and the one that gave me the nasty laceration. It's a flaky old piece of scrap from a discarded picnic table and after the wound heals and glove arrives I'll switch over to my basswood to see if I can learn to do this.

That looks pretty good! You will be amazed how much less work it is to cut basswood, especially with sharp tools. I do occasionally work with other woods, but end up power carving most becauseI lose patience. They are also harder on my tools. I have become quite fond of my carving glove also....I only injure myself when I'm not wearing it and lately have had more run-ins with sanders than anything sharp!

Good looking face... Bass wood is the way to go, so is the glove.

Great carving, do you know what kind of wood the picnic table was?

It was supposed to be redwood but I'm not sure if it was. The piece was a 1.5" square brace that ran underneath the top and the smaller chunks were all that I kept for some reason. It flakes and had some freaky grain that caused my slip so I won't use it further. I don't think the carving looks as good in person as on the photo but it's just some learning practice and I am anxious to try basswood when I get the stitches out and rest the hand for a few weeks.

Ouch!
How many carving gloves could you have bought with what you paid the doctor?
Good first carving. You will like the basswood, and will have better results. Make sure your knife is sharp. A dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one. You tend to force the knive when it is dull.

Haven't got the ER bill yet but probably could have bought about 350 gloves. My glove was in today's mail and I'll try not to cut it.

That's a pretty nice looking first attempt. Don't worry about the "cut".........no matter how hard I try, I always manage to cut myself!
In fact, if I am taking a tool roll out of the tool bag, one if the "damn" gouges or chisels always cut something not intended.
So, keep on a carvin and good luck and have a good deal of fun.
